چکیده
The Dynamics of the National Minimum Wage: Transitions Between Different Labour Market States An important policy issue is whether the National Minimum Wage (NMW) introduced in Britain in April 1999, is a stepping stone to higher wages or traps workers in a low-wage – nowage cycle. In this paper we utilise the longitudinal element of the Labour Force Survey over the period 1999 to 2003 to model transitions between different labour market states – payment at or below the NMW, above the NMW, unemployment and inactivity, using a multinomial logit approach. It appears that for many workers payment at or below the NMW is of relatively short duration and a substantial number move into higher paid jobs. JEL Classification: J0, J3, J6

Efficiency Wages and the Economic Effects of the Minimum Wage: Evidence from a Low-Wage Labour Market
We exploit a natural experiment provided by the 1999 introduction of the UK National Minimum Wage (NMW) to test for efficiency wage considerations in a low-wage sector, the UK residential care homes industry. Empirical results provide support to the wagesupervision trade-off prediction of the shirking model and suggest that the NMW may have operated as an efficiency wage. Our findings are in li...
متن کاملA Re - examination of the Impact of the UK National Minimum Wage on Employment Richard Dickens
A general consensus has emerged that while the UK National Minimum Wage (NMW) raised the pay of low wage workers it did little to harm their employment prospects. This is in contrast to the US and other countries where a debate over minimum wage effects still rages on. We re-examine the evidence on the introduction of the NMW and look at subsequent increases through the recession focusing on se...

متن کاملThe Far Right Challenge; Comment on “The Rise of Post-truth Populism in Pluralist Liberal Democracies: Challenges for Health Policy”
Speed and Mannion make a good case that the rise of populism poses significant challenges for health policy. This commentary suggests that the link between populism and health policy should be further nuanced in four ways. First, a deconstruction of the term populism itself and a focus on the far right dimension of populist politics; second, a focus on the supply side and more specifically the ...
متن کاملCohort Wage Effects and Job Mobility
Economic conditions at the time of entering the labour market can induce wage differentials between entry cohorts. While there exists much empirical evidence on the existence and persistence of these cohort effects, little is known about their impact on employees’ mobility behaviour. Using a large data set derived from German administrative data, this paper analyzes the determinants of job mobi...
